Abstract

The European Green Deal, published by the European Commission in December 2019, aims to make Europe a net zero carbon emission zone by 2050. The Deal, which Turkey is part of, is not just a climate action plan but also a comprehensive economic plan that includes issues such as clean and safe energy supply, circular economy, smart cities, green finance, carbon tax, and the creation of new jobs. Academic studies are expected to provide important input in the process of reconciliation. This study is a bibliometric analysis of academic studies on the European Green Deal. For this purpose, 432 academic publications related to the Deal in the Web of Science database were analyzed. The findings show that the Deal has been studied from a multidisciplinary perspective. Publications appear not only in environmental science journals, but also in energy, chemical engineering, economics, law, business, and engineering journals. Along the same lines, the keyword network consists of six clusters with the headings of energy, sustainability, renewable energy sources, policy, waste management, and climate change. Although most of the publications are produced by researchers in European countries, it has been observed that researchers from the USA, China, and Canada also focus on the subject. The concluding part of the study includes what Turkey needs to do immediately on the issue of the Green Deal, which has been revealed to be a multisectoral and interdisciplinary issue.
